BrownA MIA
Hi peeps!
Haven't had a lot of time to devote to Vox lately. I just got back from Niagara Falls, where I was planning a big media event. It went supremely well, if I do say so myself. I'm actually working from home today because a) I have a wicked sinus headache/migraine and b) I have to write a 40-minute speech for our president.
I had never been to NF before. Our hotel (Sheraton) was on the main strip, and since it's beyond dead in the winter, my colleague and I both got upgraded to deluxe rooms with fireplaces, jacuzzis and views of the falls. They really are quite impressive, especially in winter, with great slabs of ice choking the river and the spray freezing into gargantuan icicles on the rocks and trees. Right in front of the hotel is a big park; someone had written in the snow, in huge letters that could be seen by all the hotel guests with rooms on that side, "ROBIN WILL UR MOM MARRY ME". I took a picture but haven't had time to upload anything.
We were working hard, but managed to find time for an exceptional dinner at Peller Estates, one of the many excellent wineries in the region. We had the restaurant to ourselves and sat in front of the fireplace, waited on most attentively by our Outrah-geous Frawnsh Waittehr.
The new job is going fanatastic, except for some personality/attitude problems with one of my staff. I could devote a whole post to her, but I can sum it up by sharing her reply to a polite request I made while I was on the road: "any reason you can't deal with this yourself?" How unprofessional is that? She's smart, works hard and is good at her job, but she's also snarky, bad-tempered and passive-agressive. She could have just said, "sorry, really swamped at the moment, don't think I can get to this today." And I know she's already complained to our CEO (!) that I'm "too hierarchal". I guess that means I act like I'm the boss of her. Which I am. But anyway. I think she applied for my job and is resentful that she didn't get promoted. I've mostly been ignoring her outbursts--I hate to say it but I feel like she's a bully and she definitely scares me a little. But my plan is to discuss it with my bosses.
I hate this kind of shit because I'd rather just deal with the work, you know? That's what I'm good at. Difficult personalities make me super uncomfortable. I've been pretty spoiled so far with cool, nice staff whenever I've been in a management position, though, so I might as well learn how to handle this kind of situation too. I'm just focusing on not taking it personally.

Every job has it's snark.
It's sounds like you have a complete handle on her and won't let her bother you. However, give her a good swift kick in the pants if the opportunity arises! :)
NF looks wonderful in the winter!
And the whole trip sounds great, ba! A Outrah-geous Frawnsh Waittehr....how FUN! :))))
I'm home with a sinus headache too. :-(
Been WONDRIN where you have been! Though I know you can't post from work...good to have you back, sounds like a pretty cool trip.
I remember driving up to 'upstate' PA and seeing huge iciccles or almost like frozen waterfalls on the cliffs on the side of the road and people would spray paint them, it was really cool ,cuz it would end up looking more ie food dye...maybe that's what it was, anyway, it was pretty trippy!
That's cool you got to upgrade your room, great pic of the falls! I have never been there either.
I've been to Niagra once in the summer. And my parents went to the Falls for their honeymoon. Yep, a stereotypical mid-century Midwestern honeymoon.
Winter can be so lovely, once you get past that cold part.
Good luck with Miss Pissy. You have a good read on it and this needs to be handled sooner rather than later. Your energy is better spent on work than on always needing to watch your back. o_O
What an amazing photo! I have never been to Niagara Falls, and I just can't picture how massive it must be. Photos and even video don't do it justice, and my imagination isn't big enough.
Sorry to hear about Ms. Grumpypants at the office. Definitely speak to your bosses about it. It may be nothing more than some people simply don't know the meaning of the word "tact."
