Name Game Meme

As a girl with a man's name--Bryn--I'm torn on the issue of gender clarity in naming. On the one hand I hate those creepy gender neutral names, like Pat, Leslie, and Kelly. On the other hand, I love the occasional departure from gender rules, like men named Jayne and women named Kevin ;o)
Re: Dr. she-Kevin: every time I mention her in a speech or something, the proofreaders correct "she' to "he". Then I have to call them and explain, no, in fact, Kevin is a her.
Oh, and in French, 'Carol' can be a guy.
Well, the whole French/English thing creates a whole passel of problems. Jean for instance.
Except for women, Jean becomes Jeanne. No ambiguity at all. But I know plenty of guys named Jean-Marie. And it's true that if someone from Chicoutimi has to call somebody in Nashville named Jean Smith, they'll assume it's a guy. Likewise is an American has to call somebody in Quebec named Jean Tremblay, I guess they would assume it's a woman.
A Greek woman I worked with had twins, a boy and a girl, and named them Aaron and Erin.
Even she didn't enunciate the names clearly enough to make a distinction.
I'm also getting really irritated by all the -esha and -eka variants of names. The fad hasn't caught in Canada so much, but when I was in the US last week, in the paper I was reading about some woman named TaSheka and her kids LaMeka, Laneesha and L'shon. I love my sisters, but people, come on--at least use REAL African names, there are plenty of beautiful ones.
Aubrey is another man's name that is mostly used for girls these days.
