A couple of days late for Canada Day...but there was a time when every single Canadian kid had to learn this song. Also, check out the munnies we used to have with bunnies and lynxes on them! I have actually never seen those before, I wonder what happened to them. We need to bring those back!
My 5-year-old 40G iPod Classic is dying a whirring, skipping, stuttering death. Of course it isn't under warranty any longer. Of course it will cost four times as much to get it repaired than to buy a new one. And of course the so-called Apple Geniuses won't be able to transfer my 2,500-plus title music library to any new device, meaning I will need to upload everything again from scratch.
There's a new Pirates, Privateers and Freebooters exhibit that just opened at the Montreal Museum of Archeology and History!
Best Welcome Back Kotter episode ever.
One of my musician friends (she is a professional viola da gamba player) spent Easter in Australia. She sent me this pic of the freaking redonkulous chocolate wombat someone gave her as a gift.
Guess bunnies aren't so beloved in Australia...
So, GM and Segway unveiled the PUMA today.
GM is headquartered in Michigan, right?
Where it's been known to, oh, you know, SNOW from time to time.
How do they expect this thing will perform between the months of May and October?
Oh, and it looks like someone strapped a couple of toilets to my granny's wheeled shopping basket. Does this look safe to you? Do you really trust that you won't be crushed by a bus or a dumptruck?
But Segway is involved. So it must be practical and will surely be a runaway success *eyeroll*.
And of course, GM is globally recognized for its sound business plans, visionary leadership and sharply designed, well engineered products that consumers want. Oh, and the company doesn't have that carrion whiff of desperation around it at all.

Among swing dancers and Lindy hoppers, Frankie Manning is a legend. One of the best dancers to come out of Harlem in the 30s, he amazed audiences with his acrobatic lifts, spins and aerials. Check out this clip from one of my favourite dance movies of all time, 1941's "Hellzapoppin'". Frankie is the guy in the mechanic's overalls.
Frankie turns 95 years young in May, and he is still dancing. Here he is in 2003 leading some youngsters in the Shim Sham, a fun little dance number he made famous. Sure beats the crap out of the Chicken Dance, doesn't it?
Today, the Shim Sham is danced all over the world. And in honour of Frankie's 95th birthday, hoofers in cities around the globe have been filming themselves doing the Shim Sham. A montage of these videos will be presented to Frankie on May 26 in New York, as part of a big swing dance festival being held in his honour.
The Ottawa swing dancers recorded their tribute on Parliament Hill yesterday afternoon. I didn't participate because I couldn't make the practice where they actually learned the steps. But it sure looks like fun, doesn't it? It was frickin' cold too, but these cats don't seem to care!
Here are a few more fun videos from the Global Shim Sham. Enjoy!
